China Denounces U.S. Tariffs Targeting India

(MENAFN) China has openly denounced the United States' tariff measures against India, with Beijing’s ambassador in New Delhi, Xu Feihong, labeling the US as a “bully” using tariffs to exert undue pressure. Speaking at an event in India’s capital on Thursday, Xu criticized Washington’s trade tactics.

“The US has long benefited from free trade but now uses tariffs as bargaining chips,” Xu said. “The US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India and is threatening to impose more. China firmly opposes it. In the face of such acts, silence or compromise only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India.”

This latest condemnation follows Washington’s recent announcement to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports over New Delhi’s ongoing purchases of Russian crude oil. These new duties, set to take effect on August 27, are in addition to the existing 25% tariffs implemented after the failure of US-India trade negotiations.

Xu Feihong reiterated, “..has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India and even threatened for more. China firmly opposes it. Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India.”

The ambassador’s comments come just ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Tianjin for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. Modi is anticipated to engage in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the event, further deepening diplomatic ties.

Relations between the two Asian powers have shown improvement since their leaders met at the BRICS summit in Kazan last October, after a period of tension following the deadly 2020 Himalayan border clash. This year has seen a resurgence in bilateral exchanges: India resumed tourist visas for Chinese nationals after a five-year pause, and China reopened access for Indian pilgrims to Hindu sites in Tibet for the first time since 2020. The two nations have also agreed to restore border trade at three points and allow direct flights between India and mainland China.

Additionally, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited New Delhi this week for border talks, meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Modi, signaling ongoing efforts to stabilize and enhance their relationship.
