Sudanese Cabinet Holds Talks in Khartoum
Media described the session, led by Prime Minister Kamal Idris, as “a symbolic step toward the return of state institutions to the capital, amid ongoing security arrangements to ensure stability.”
Prior to this meeting, Sudan’s government operated from its temporary base in Port Sudan, located in the eastern part of the country.
During Tuesday’s discussions, media reported that all ministries outlined their plans for the year ahead, with particular emphasis on public service restoration, security, reconstruction, and facilitating the voluntary return of displaced citizens.
Prime Minister Idris officially took office on May 31, following his swearing-in before Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Since the conflict began, Khartoum has been fiercely contested between the Sudanese army and the RSF, with the latter controlling most of the capital except key military sites such as the army’s General Command Headquarters, as well as locations in Khartoum, Bahri, and Omdurman.
Recent months have seen significant territorial gains by the Sudanese army, pushing RSF forces back and reclaiming key areas including Khartoum and White Nile State.
On May 21, the army declared it had regained complete control of Khartoum, proclaiming the capital cleared of RSF presence.
The conflict’s human toll is staggering: over 20,000 deaths and around 15 million displaced, according to the United Nations and local officials. A separate study by U.S. universities estimates the death count at approximately 130,000.
