Hundreds in London Pay Tribute to Palestinian Journalists

(MENAFN) Hundreds of individuals assembled in London on Wednesday to pay tribute to Palestinian reporters who lost their lives in Israeli bombardments in Gaza.

The gathering was held outside the UK Prime Minister’s Office at Downing Street.

The commemoration, arranged by the Freelance Branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), featured demonstrators holding placards with the names of media workers who had been killed in Israeli assaults.

Prior to the vigil, NUJ representatives submitted a letter to No. 10 Downing Street, outlining their demands from the British government concerning these fatalities.

During the event, former BBC and LBC broadcaster Sangita Myska drew attention to the killing of Al Jazeera reporter Anas Al-Sharif.

She stated he was “an important journalist for viewers” and emphasized that although the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had classified him as being at risk, he was given no protection and was killed on Aug. 10.

“Governments neither said anything nor did anything about this,” Myska declared, pointing out that Israel had wrongly branded Al-Sharif as a terrorist and underlining that “Israel still continues to threaten journalists.”

Myska described Palestinian correspondents as “the bravest people in the world” and stressed that “they continue their work despite Israeli attacks and threats. But the West belittles their profession.”

She also mentioned the five journalists recently killed in an Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital, who had been working for well-known international outlets such as Reuters, The Associated Press, Middle East Eye, and Al Jazeera.
