Russian Court Files Lawsuit Against Twitch

(MENAFN) A court in Moscow has imposed a fine on Twitch, the American live-streaming platform widely used for gaming content, amounting to 61 million rubles (roughly $760,000).

The penalty was issued due to the company’s "failing to open a local representative office in Russia," as required by national law.

The legal proceedings took place in Russia's capital, where the court determined that Twitch had breached legislation by not establishing a physical presence within the country.

This decision is not the first of its kind; Twitch had earlier faced penalties in Russia for "violating various laws."

In a related move, on the same Tuesday, Russian authorities also fined Google and Wikipedia a combined total of 13 million rubles.

According to the court's judgment, these platforms had not taken adequate steps to block access to certain banned materials, thereby failing to comply with legal standards.

Moreover, other American social networking giants like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and X have already been restricted in Russia.

These actions were taken amid accusations that these services did not conform to the country's legal requirements.
