VDOT Schedules Oct. 29 Public Hearing in Staunton for Greenville Avenue Corridor Improvements

STAUNTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing in the City of Staunton concerning proposed corridor improvements on Greenville Avenue (Route 11) between Statler Boulevard and Commerce Road. The open-house meeting will take place between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Bessie Weller Elementary School, 600 Greenville Ave., Staunton, VA 24401.

Citizens can come in anytime during the meeting hours and discuss the project on a one-on-one basis with VDOT officials and designers. Submit written comments at the meeting or within 10 days after the meeting date to Sabrina Tarbell, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 811 Commerce Road, Staunton, VA  24401-9029. Oral comments can be recorded at the meeting with the assistance of a court reporter.

The Greenville Avenue “road diet” projects will improve traffic operations and enhance access for bicyclists and pedestrians. A road diet typically removes one or more travel lanes and utilizes the space for other uses or travel modes.

Greenville Avenue between Statler Boulevard and Commerce Road is currently five lanes wide, with two through lanes in each direction and a two-way left-turn lane in the center of the roadway.

Throughout the project limits, a single travel lane in each direction will serve motor vehicle traffic. A median will replace portions of the center turn lane to limit the number of full access points and reduce crashes. The median will consist of grass in some locations and concrete in others.

From Statler Boulevard to just south of Richmond Avenue (Route 250), the right lane in each direction will be converted to a five-foot-wide bicycle lane with a four-foot buffer separating it from vehicle traffic. Between Richmond Avenue and Commerce Road, the bike lane will transition to a shared-use path and connect to a planned shared-used path on Commerce Road.

Sidewalk construction will close gaps in existing sidewalks between Statler Boulevard and Commerce Road. Other pedestrian improvements include crosswalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps.

The Greenville Avenue road diet projects and pedestrian/bicycle improvements will enhance safety for all roadway users, further expand Staunton’s multimodal network and enhance access to and from the city’s downtown district. They were selected for funding under the SMART SCALE process for prioritizing transportation projects.

In 2023 Greenville Avenue had an average traffic count of 11,000 vehicles per day. By the design year of 2048 the estimated traffic count is 14,000 vehicles per day.

The total estimated cost for this project is $3.9 million. This includes $750,000 for preliminary engineering, $100,000 for right of way and utility relocation, and $3.1 million for construction.
